Since then, Pilates has evolved to suit all people in the general community. Pilates is a low impact exercise program, that can be aerobic or non-aerobic, and comprises a series of approximately 600 controlled movements. Each exercise has a specific placement, rhythm and breathing pattern, and requires focus and concentration to move your body through precise ranges of motion, and to find that central point to control your body through movement. Pilates stretches and lengthens body muscles in a balanced fashion, but never works them to exhaustion.
Pilates focuses on deeper, smaller muscles that support body structure and due to its low impact nature, is available to everyone regardless of fitness level, from beginners to elite athletes. Pilates involves low-to-the-ground body weight exercises using resistance against gravity, with exercises including leg circles, leg stretches, rolling back, roll-over and spine stretch. It focuses on strengthening and developing lower and upper back muscles, stomach and general core, and despite its simplicity, this low-impact and gentle style of exercise can still provide a significant strength workout. Pilates is a method of physical training that improves athletic and dance performance through building flexibility, co-ordination, and core strength.
Reformer Pilates offers a more intense and advanced workout over traditional mat Pilates, by using a bed-like apparatus. The springs, ropes and straps of the Pilates Reformer add resistance, and as proficiency increases, the fluid transitioning from one exercise to the next allows constant movement, promoting better postural alignment, development of cardiovascular endurance, and potential weight loss through increased calorie burning.
