Why Bone Health Matters Key Statistics

Bone health is essential for overall health and well-being. Bones provide the framework for our body, protect our organs, and store minerals such as calcium that are essential for many bodily functions. As we age, our bones naturally start to lose density and become more fragile, which can lead to conditions such as osteoporosis and an increased risk of fractures. Following are some important facts emphasising why bone health matters:

Over-50s-are-more-prone-to-osteoporosis

  • Osteoporosis affects over 4.74 million Australians aged 50 and above, leading to fractures and mobility challenges.
Osteoporosis-in-a-knee

  • In Australia, 2.2 million women and 0.7 million men over 50 are impacted by osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis-treatment

  • Osteopenia, the precursor to osteoporosis, often remains undiagnosed, increasing the risk of developing osteoporosis unknowingly.
Osteoporosis-x-ray

  • Approximately 80% of fractures in people aged 50 and above in Australia are related to osteoporosis.

There are steps we can take throughout our lives to support bone health and by prioritsing bone health, we can reduce the risk of injury and maintain our mobility and independence as we age. At Atkins Health we are dedicated to helping you achieve optimal bone health. Learn about the key to improving bone density and reducing the risks of osteopenia and osteoporosis with our evidence-based exercise programs.

REVIEW OUR CASE STUDY containing insights and strategies for transforming your bone health

Nancy-Atkins-Bone-Health

This is Nancy, who has triumphed over adversity and emerged stronger than ever. Despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles since being diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2021, Nancy has refused to let them define her. She fought through the tough times with unwavering determination and is realising the benefits.

Fast forward to 2023, where Nancy’s hard work and commitment paid off in the most incredible way. Her recent bone density scan results left us in awe! The scans revealed a remarkable 7% increase in bone density in Nancy’s hips, which has helped to build her resilience to the disease and her strength. But that’s not all – her lumbar spine showed an astonishing 16.5% increase in bone density. Nancy is no longer osteoporotic in her spine!

Nancy is well on her way to achieving the same incredible progress for her hips. With her determination and the support of her Atkins Health team, we’re confident that she will conquer that goal too.

Meet the members of the osteoporosis group at Canungra conducted by our Exercise Physiologist, Kurt Douglas!

Meet the inspiring members of the class: Wiebke, Brenda, and Diane! They’re enjoying the uplifting atmosphere and camaraderie of this special group, all focused on improving their bone mineral density through resistance-based and impact-loading exercises. Research shows that “loading” the bones in a safe and appropriate manner promotes an increase in bone-building hormones. Our Osteoporosis group class is designed to do just that, helping you strengthen your bones and improve your overall health. Learn more about our classes.
